Google to Begin Providing “Bad Link” Examples in Webmaster Tools

In an effort to provide users with more relevant search results, Google released the original Penguin algorithm update in April 2012. Since then, Google has been cracking down on websites that utilize untrustworthy paid link-building and other spammy techniques that are commonly practiced among black-hat search engine optimization (SEO) providers to manipulate search rankings.

For many website owners who have been penalized or given warning by Google for bad links, it is not apparent as to which links are causing the penalties. To help clear up the confusion, Google’s Web spam team intends to give more insight by providing examples of bad links through the Google Webmaster Tools console.

In the video below, Matt Cutts, head of Google’s Webspam team states, “I wouldn’t be surprised if you see one, two, three, some number of example URLs or links that give you an idea of where to look in order to find the source of things that are causing that particular action.” Giving the indication that we can expect to see more examples in messages in the coming future, Cutts then states, “We’re going to keep looking at how we can expand the number of example URLs that we include in messages.”

These examples will help website owners identify and remove the links that are negatively impacting their rankings. To ensure that your SEO campaign follows Google’s best practices and avoids penalties, it is highly recommended to retain the services of a white hat SEO company in Tampa.
